Title of Lesson: Nishnawbe News Wounded Knee Source Comparison Lesson Plan

Subject Area: US History

Grade Level: 10

Approximate Time to Do Lesson: 120 minutes or two periods

Tags: AIM, American Indian Movement, Red Power, Civil Rights, Wounded Knee

Overview: In this lesson plan, students will analyze two sources from different perspectives using word choice and connotation to identity bias.  This concept is important in the study of history because it helps students see history as a discipline reliant on sources that sometimes have opposing opinions of an event. Many students view history as just dates rather than interpretation by a historian. This lesson hopefully will engage them in the practice of ‘doing history.’

Standards Addressed:

  • 8.3.4 Civil Rights Expanded – evaluate the major accomplishments and setbacks in securing civil rights and liberties for all Americans over the 20th century.

  • P2.4 Use relevant information from multiple credible sources representing a wide range of views, considering the origin, authority, structure, and context, to answer a compelling or supporting question.

Modifications for Diverse Learning Needs: Peer support, reading supports (such as a pre highlighted text or a text reader) may be provided.

Lesson Objectives: Students will first complete a background reading on the historical event of the Wounded Knee Occupation in 1973. Then compare and contrast two sources on the same event in history using critical analysis steps.
